Richard Taylor Jr. Member Spotlight

Richard Taylor Jr. Member Spotlight

Jun 2, 2021

If you’ve spent any time at Workhorse, you’ve probably seen Richard Taylor Jr. One of our founding members, and a daily runner along Sunset Avenue, Richard is well-known in Edmonds—and in the world. He just completed what we’re calling his tax season—the busiest month of the year for him—May, which is Mental Health Awareness Month. As an author, speaker, and mental health advocate, Richard’s work is especially important during Mental Health Awareness month and he’s working hard to bring his message of empowerment and transformation to not only our seaside community, but also to as many ears that are open to it.

We sat down with Richard to ask him a few questions for his Member Spotlight. Here is what he said:

Can you tell us a bit about your work? What do you do and what do you love about it? I’m a mental health advocate, suicide prevention and leadership speaker, author of 7 books and a podcast host. I work with colleges, corporations and organizations on simplifying hard conversations around mental health. I love a lot of things about my work, but the most rewarding aspect is seeing people find healing and a greater sense of purpose in their life. I love people and I find joy in others being able to thrive in their daily endeavors.

That’s transformative work! You must need time to re-center after spending so much time focusing on others. Can you tell us a bit about yourself? What are your interests and hobbies? What’s a fun fact? I was born and raised on the southside of Chicago and have been a resident of Washington state for about the last four years. My interests and hobbies include physical fitness, anything dealing with the water, specifically boating and marine biology, and writing and singing music in my spare time. A fun fact about me is that I was able to do background singing for country music star Trace Adkins during college.

What drew you to Workhorse? Whitney Popa! Haha, but truly, she slid into my DMs asking if I wanted to check out the space, and the rest is history.

Whatever gets them in the door—that’s our philosophy! Glad it worked out. What’s your favorite thing about our Edmonds coworking space? I love the community and the creativity that went into creating this work space. As a podcaster, I immediately fell in love with the sound quality of the phone booth!

The phone booth is one of our favorite features, too. We’re excited to build another one because it’s been such a popular place to take calls and record like you do. What problems do you think the space helps you solve in your work life? The biggest problem Workhorse has solved for me is regaining motivation. I’m not sure if it’s being around others working or the change of scenery, but my productivity in just the first 5 months of 2021 have been at an all time high. I credit that to being in this community.
