Celebrating our members and their work is one of the most rewarding parts of our Workhorse co-working community. This month, we chatted with Erin Pohan, owner of the bookkeeping and accounting company, upkeeping.co. Learn more about her ideal clients, what she likes to do in her free time and the country across the ocean where her two kids were born.
Can you tell us a bit about your work? What do you do and what do you love about it?
My short elevator pitch is I make accounting less stuffy and more relevant, which in turn helps business owners actually understand their books. I started Upkeeping in early 2021 after spending over 15 years in various facets of the accounting industry (public, private, non-profit, educational). I was fortunate to be mentored by an incredibly detail-oriented and down-to-earth CPA firm whose partners taught me what it meant to excel AND be relatable to clients. I quickly learned that my niche was building relationships with small business owners while helping them with their day-to-day or month-to-month bookkeeping needs. I am so privileged to now work with some great clients all over the country who are all on really awesome adventures. I’m also really enjoying the entrepreneurial journey and the creativity that it’s bringing into my life.
Can you tell us a bit about yourself? What are your interests and hobbies? What’s a fun fact?
I grew up in Cleveland, OH and moved to Seattle with my family two years ago after over a decade of world travels with the military (my husband is a Marine). We’ve lived in ten different houses and both of our kids were born in Japan. We try to live our life very intentionally and chase fun even when it seems crazy or quirky to others. In my free time, I enjoy playing the violin, running and joining last-minute Ragnar races, traveling the world, and cruising around Lake Union on our boat. Fun fact: I have a freakishly good memory and can remember the smallest details of a 5-minute conversation I had with someone I met over a year ago.
What drew you to Workhorse HQ? What’s your favorite thing about it? What problems does it help you solve?
I was drawn to Workhorse due to its proximity to my kids’ school. It’s been amazing to drop the kids off, get in several hours of uninterrupted work, and do it all with a coffee or kombucha in hand. I’m also an extrovert and being around others gives me energy, so it’s great to be in a room full of people again.
Anything else you want us to mention?
Life is too short to work on something you don’t enjoy!
If you see Erin around the space, be sure to say hey (especially if you need help with your books). In the meantime, learn more about her on her website and be sure to give her a follow on Instagram.
