About Workhorse

Workhorse is a bright, barn-chic office space near the Edmonds waterfront built to optimize the productivity of today’s remote workers. It offers flexible, 24/7 work areas; a tech-loaded conference room; rotating, local beverages; fast WiFi; and unmatched community connection.  

Workhorse opened in March 2020 right before the start of the pandemic. Strange times, indeed, but also a great time to slowly get our footing in a new type of business for owners, Dr. Larry Maurer and Dr. Lew Estabrook, who have owned the Waterworks Building (where Workhorse is located), since 2018.

When a former tenant chose not to renew their lease, Larry and Lew took an idea mentioned by Greg Urban from the Chamber of Commerce to create a space for Edmonds’s remote employees, gig workers, and entrepreneurs where they could be productive, meet each other, and build community. An action sports photographer in his “free” time, Larry had been contracted to take photos of workhorses, which inspired the design and aesthetic of Workhorse. 

Ultimately, we hope Workhorse will be a haven for Edmonds’s workhorses, a place where they can feel productive, valued, creative, and inspired. 

As our motto affirms, “We pull harder together!”

About The Owners

Lew Estabrook and Larry Maurer 

Lew and Larry built their careers in sports medicine and met through their shared interest in treating athletes. After buying the building in which they practiced, and selling it ten years later, they decided that Edmonds was the perfect place to invest in commercial real estate. They fell in love with the Waterworks building because of its beautiful steel and wood interior design elements. Its proximity to downtown Edmonds was also ideal. The decision to open a coworking site in 2019 followed a discussion with the chamber of commerce and the realization that there was a great opportunity, in a great location. With the Ferry, the train, the park-n-ride, and the downtown restaurants only a short walk away, coworking was a great fit.

Lew Estabrook has been in practice in the Kirkland area for 30 years and has built his practice by using chiropractic care on a short-term basis and stressing self-help techniques. You can read more about him on his practices’ website here. Lew is married and has three daughters.  He and his wife are looking for a place in Edmonds for when he retires from practice.

Larry Maurer, DPM, is a podiatric specialist in sports medicine and pediatric care at Washington Foot & Ankle Sports Medicine in Kirkland, Washington. You can read more about his practice here. Dr. Maurer has enjoyed a fun second career as a sports photographer.  Clients have included The Seahawks, The Sounders, Brooks Sports, Getty Images, and the AP, and most recently for 2021’s An Edmonds Kind of 4th. The imagery of workhorses at Workhorse and on the website are all images Larry took himself!
